Design Capability at Scale

The challenge

Twelve app and web experiences operating without unified design infrastructure. Inconsistent quality, duplicated effort across product teams, and no single source of truth for design or research.

What changed

Built and led design capability across UX Research, Content Design, Design Systems, and DesignOps — establishing REA as the market-leading property brand in Australia. Co-authored RICE prioritisation framework with the Head of Product, with research and experimentation as primary decision inputs — design at the table, not downstream of it.

Built Construct Kit — the design system at the centre of twelve app and web experiences — and measured its ROI through a four-pillar model: Engagement, Efficiency, Adoption, and Speed. Established DesignOps across five pillars: Design Process, Design Systems, Design Culture, Design Tooling, and Visual Identity — reducing friction that was making design the bottleneck in product and engineering delivery.

Business impact
  • REA's enterprise design system saved over 400,000 product design and development hours across four years — tracked through code asset reuse per release (300,000 hours documented at the three-year milestone)
  • System-level changes to typography, colour, and styles enabled a full visual identity uplift of realestate.com.au without requiring teams to rebuild from scratch
  • Consumer experience redesign contributed to 33% ARR growth in app searches and engagement
  • Research established as a partnership model across ten lines of business
  • Scaled design community to 70+ FTEs with 94 Culture Amp engagement score and 50/50 gender balance in a hybrid environment

Building from the Inside Out

The challenge

Research capability under-resourced and under-leveraged. No craft competency framework. Design, research, and content operating without shared standards or infrastructure across a complex health insurance enterprise.

What changed

Spent 18 months building the research foundation — demonstrating impact through business decisioning — then expanded remit to lead all four capability domains across the enterprise.

Founding Research Capability

The challenge

No dedicated research function. Product decisions made without systematic discovery. Design team executing without validation infrastructure across one of Australia's most complex logistics and digital businesses.

What changed

Identified the capability gap from within a design management role. Made the case to leadership and founded Australia Post's first UX Research team — shifting product culture toward evidence-based decisioning.
